Mahamudra: Essence and Practice( Book II)

To Accept the Present Life Positively

Yixin Chen: How to maintain the state of being enlightened in walking, standing, sitting and lying down?

●Xue Mo: To a yogin, he needs to put his enlightenment into action, to prove the truth he find with practice, instead of asking others being the sage but not himself. There’re too many teachings about wisdom, but few people practices the teachings.

So, when I was writing, I have never forgotten to practice the wisdom I believe, to contemplate my behavior with this wisdom. I always focus on what I’m doing, with complete dedication; however I am not attached to it. That is to say, I’m fully devoted to what I’m doing, and when it’s finished, I will dump it from my heart, and move to the next thing with the same importance.

As in our life, eating is important one hundred percent, sleeping is important one hundred percent, washing face is important one hundred percent, it’s to say only the thing you are doing at present is important one hundred percent. When the thing at that moment is done, the next thing we’ll do is also important one hundred percent. I never have the past that used to be important one hundred percent influence my doing at present.

When you get back to the dormitory from the office, sleeping is important one hundred percent, all you need to do is to have a good sleep, relax and stop worrying about the work. When you are at home, staying with your kids, just keep in mind you don’t have any other roles but your kids’ father, so playing with them is important one hundred percent at the moment. However, many people are always occupied by ‘important things’ in their own conceit, leaving no room for things that is also important, e.g. health, enlightenment, clear in mind, relaxation, freedom, deliverance. Their mind is tied to the important in their own conceit, so that the real enjoyment of life will be interfered, diluted and infringed. Therefore, many people become exhausted. This is because they pay too much attention to the important in their thought——actually it’s a kind of obsession that we speak of——that becomes pressure to the life. If you want to get rid of it, you should set free your heart first.

Life and death are the most important things to every human being. When the practice comes to a certain level, even life and death could be laid down. Trying our best, then just let it go. As for how the world goes, that’s only the matter of the world. No matter how hard we work on it, we can change nothing but ourselves and the people close to us. We just cannot change the whole world. Certainly, when everyone makes change, the world will change. So I always say that, if one changes, the world changes.

Wiseman needs to learn how to enjoy his live. In fact, for a man who really enjoys the practice, he’s never been separated from the Buddha, from his family. He always enjoys the pleasure of sharing the world, doing the common things, having the same dream. On the other hand, if we have any discrimination, we will only be happy when we have our family aside; and the happiness becomes pain when they leave us. If the separation is treated as pain, the pain will really exist.

In term of ultimate implication, you and your inner thoughts are united. Don’t have the outer world affect your heart and try to enjoy the harvest of life, other than having it pressed and locked. We should even appreciate the adversities brought by the fate, for our life will have whole new experience from that; instead of treat it as the source of all the pains and tortures.

For most people, except the pains brought by disease, the sufferings and tortures in life all derive from the un-enlightened hearts and obsession. Obsession is a kind of greed, and greed roots from foolishness. Greed means the intent to possess something that doesn’t belong to him or her.

A man should learn to accept existing things in life, including health, enlightenment as well as some adversities. In the same way, when we appreciate the virtues of a friend, we should also accept their shortages. It’s important to learn appreciation and contentment. To a practitioner, the torments are actually from his heart, not from the outer world.
